Omg this plastic straw ban debate is really fucking annoying. 1) yes they make up only .03% of the plastic in the ocean BUT .03% of 110 million tons of plastic is still 45,000 tons of plastic 2) NO ONE said we can’t have straws at restaurants etc we are asking to ban plastic straws. There is still metal, biodegradable, bamboo, and other types of reusable straws out there. I understand some people with disabilities need straws and having them available is important and thats why we are asking for a change to environmentally friendly straws over plastic ones. 3) Saying this ban is bad because it doesn’t hold companies accountable but instead holds the people accountable is stupid. Because one the ban is for companies not citizens and secondly its our earth we are all accountable for our carbon footprints and what we do to it. And yes this is a layered issue that involves class and race but not using plastic straws is a personal choice in most cases and banning them would benefit the earth, the ocean, and us
hmmm the more I read up on this issue it looks like the number is above .03%? Idk where twitter got running with that number because all the journal articles I’ve been reading have estimated it way higher….
