Moments such as this save AOS Kirk from being a shallow, brainless character. Chris Pine did amazing job giving depth to Jim’s portrayal at every (rare) opportunity he was given.

They should have kept the deleted scenes to show why Jim acts the way he does.

Same for Spock. The childhood scenes for both were good background stories that were needed to help us understand our heroes.
