the biggest mistake with the new star wars trilogy is that they played it too safe. they didn’t want to alienate people or make them angry like the prequels did so they imported a carbon copy of the world state of the original trilogy because that’s what was popular, and in doing so they had to bring the star wars universe back to square one and tell the same story over again but this time with different characters and trying to pass it off as something new when it isn’t, it’s just the OT over again and it’s causing all kinds of narrative hogwash and forcing the characters from the OT into roles they never should have to play. I love the new characters, I love the ships, the aliens, the planets, the set pieces, the dialogue, the relationships – it’s all good, all star wars and I love it but it feels hollow if you poke at it too hard because then you realise that instead of telling the next chapter of the skywalker story they’re telling the old one
